Two bottles can show the same fruit and contain quite different drinks. In Germany, the terms juice, nectar and fruit drink tell you more than the picture on the label. Knowing the difference makes it easier to compare ingredients and fruit content.

What 100% juice means

Fruit juice contains 100% fruit juice, whether directly pressed or reconstituted from concentrate. “Not from concentrate” describes production, not automatically a higher vitamin content. Fruit contains natural sugars, so 100% juice is not sugar-free.

Why nectar is different

Some fruits produce a very thick or tart juice. Nectar includes water, with minimum fruit content varying by fruit. Added sugar or honey may be used. Read the stated fruit percentage rather than assuming it is pure juice.

Compare fruit drinks

Fruit drinks can contain considerably less fruit. Compare the ingredients, fruit percentage and nutrition per 100 ml. “No added sugar” and “sugar-free” are different claims. Mixing juice with plain water lets you choose the dilution yourself.
