What are we playing?
First you catch up on the week, then someone deals the cards. Before long, one UNO player is down to their last card while the person opposite is still working out their next move. Just ask our team for a game: alongside UNO, we have Okey, Mensch ärgere dich nicht, Skip-Bo and backgammon. And if you think you’ll want a rematch, there’s no harm in mentioning it now.

Okey: the shuffle is part of the game
Mix the tiles together by hand at our tables beside the green wall. Everyone joins in, and that’s part of an Okey evening here. Our Okey page takes a closer look at the tables and why we keep automatic shufflers out of the game.

UNO: don’t forget that last-card call
Match the colour, number or symbol and try to empty your hand. It’s easy to get started, while reverses and draw cards keep everyone watching. When you’re down to one card, remember to call “UNO!” Our blog explains how draw cards work under the official rules.

Backgammon for two
Two players, one board and dice that keep you adjusting your plans. Move your checkers into your home board, then bear them off. It’s a good choice when it’s just the two of you.

Mensch ärgere dich nicht: get all four home
Roll the die and move your pieces around the board, aiming to bring all four home. If an opponent lands on your space, your piece goes back to the start. Even a comfortable lead can suddenly look less certain.

Skip-Bo: work through your stock pile
Build sequences from 1 to 12 in the middle of the table. The real aim is to empty your own stock pile before everyone else. Skip-Bo cards are wild and can stand in for any number, so keep an eye on the next card you need to play.
Shuffled by hand. Played together.
Okey tiles on the table, cards at the ready – and plenty of time to catch up.
Playing card games at the café
The Leaf welcomes guests aged 18 and over. If you are coming specifically for Okey or with a larger group, please enquire about a table in advance.
At The Leaf, you can play UNO, Okey, backgammon, Mensch ärgere dich nicht and Skip-Bo. If you would like to bring your own game, just check with us beforehand; in many cases, that is possible.
Fair play for everyone: Okey tables are booked in 2.5-hour slots. If no one has booked the table afterwards, you’re welcome to keep playing.
