Silicone, soft-touch, fabric-covered or traditionally wrapped: shisha hoses differ in more than appearance. Their surface, flexibility, construction and care requirements can vary considerably. Here are the most common types and the differences that genuinely matter when choosing one.

Silicone hoses

Silicone hoses are flexible, simple and easy to handle. They can be paired with many different mouthpieces, which makes them especially common on modern shishas. Many silicone hoses can be rinsed with water and then hung up to dry. Very soft silicone, however, may twist or kink more easily. If your hose uses special materials or coatings and the cleaning method is unclear, check the manufacturer’s or retailer’s guidance first.

Soft-touch silicone hoses

Soft-touch is not a completely different type of hose. It is usually still a silicone hose, but with a matt surface and a slightly softer feel. The main differences are therefore tactile and visual: soft-touch silicone looks more understated than a smooth or glossy finish. Its matt surface may show signs of use more clearly over time and can need a little more care on the outside than a basic smooth silicone hose.

Covered hoses

A covered hose has a sleeve made from fabric, synthetic leather or leather around the hose itself. This primarily changes its appearance and how it feels in the hand. On a traditionally or elaborately styled shisha, such a hose can complement the overall design particularly well. The internal construction matters, because you cannot necessarily tell from the outside which material lies beneath the cover. Do not assume that the entire sleeve can be cleaned with water.

Traditional shisha hoses

Traditional hoses often stand out through larger handles, decorative details and combinations of fabric, leather, wood or metal. Design plays a much more prominent role here than it does with a plain silicone hose. Their construction also varies more, so traditional hoses cannot all be cared for in the same way. When wood, fabric or leather is involved, it is generally wise to use water more sparingly.

Disposable hoses

Disposable hoses are generally lighter and more simply constructed than conventional reusable hoses. They are often made from plastic and supplied with a handle and connector. They are useful when a fresh hose is needed without any fuss. For regular personal use, many people instead choose a longer-lasting silicone or other reusable hose. The important distinction is that a plastic hose is not automatically disposable.

Which shisha hose is right for you?

For a simple, modern setup, silicone is the natural choice for many people. Soft-touch has a similar construction with a more matt finish. Covered or traditional hoses become more interesting when the shisha’s appearance is a priority, although their materials require closer attention during care. Ultimately, a good hose should feel comfortable in the hand, offer enough flexibility and fit the connector on your shisha. Choosing one need not be much more complicated than that.
