The main considerations with a shisha base are its material, connector and shape. Their differences become especially clear when you replace or clean one. This guide covers the key distinctions between glass, acrylic and the most common connector types.

Glass, borosilicate glass and acrylic

Glass is particularly common for shisha bases. The water level remains easy to see, and it is simple to check whether any residue is left inside during cleaning. Borosilicate glass copes better with changes in temperature than ordinary glass, although it remains vulnerable to knocks. Acrylic bases are another option. They are lighter and are used, among other things, for more compact shishas. Acrylic needs gentler cleaning because stiff brushes and harsh cleaners can leave marks on its surface more easily.

Push-fit, screw or click connectors

Not every base attaches to the stem in the same way. With a push-fit system, the stem sits in the neck of the base with a seal. Other shishas use a thread or a click-lock connector. When replacing a base, its shape is therefore not the only thing that matters. The connector and diameter must match, along with the correct seal where one is required. Two bases can look almost identical and still be incompatible.

Shape and everyday care

The shape of a base matters most when it is time to clean it. Wider openings are usually easier to reach, while a brush may not reach every area of a narrow neck or heavily contoured sides. In most cases, a soft brush that fits through the opening without force is enough. Take extra care when cleaning the outside of decorated or coated bases. After rinsing, allow the base to dry thoroughly. This is also a good time to inspect the rim and connector, where small signs of damage often appear first.

Which base suits your shisha?

When buying a new base, the connector must come first. Appearance, shape and material can be considered after that. Glass is often the obvious choice for anyone who wants a straightforward base with a clear view of the inside. Acrylic can be useful when lower weight or a compact design matters more. The final shape is largely a matter of taste, provided that both the connector and the size fit your shisha.
