10 places for a winter day in Berlin

A Berlin winter day does not need to be packed. Pick one short walk and one warm place, leaving enough time for a proper break afterwards.

Step outside for a while

01

Brandenburg Gate

Start at Pariser Platz, follow Unter den Linden for a short stretch and let the city settle around you. Twenty unhurried minutes are often enough for this first stop.

02

Großer Tiergarten

Broad paths and bare branches give Tiergarten a particular calm in winter. Begin by Brandenburg Gate, walk towards the Victory Column for a while, then turn back before the cold takes over.

03

Gendarmenmarkt

The German Cathedral, French Cathedral and Concert Hall frame one of central Berlin’s most handsome squares. It is worth a short circuit even without an event, especially as the lights come on in the late afternoon.

04

Gardens of the World

The Gardens of the World still offer very different garden spaces in winter. Check which areas are open and, with limited daylight, choose one part of the grounds instead of trying to cover everything.

Warm up inside

05

Museum Island and Pergamonmuseum. The Panorama

One museum is plenty for a good afternoon on Museum Island. The Pergamonmuseum itself is still under renovation; nearby, The Panorama pairs selected original objects with a large circular image as the current alternative.

06

Humboldt Forum

Choose one exhibition at the Humboldt Forum, then take your time moving through its generous interiors. On a grey day, it is an easy cultural stop right in the centre.

07

Futurium

Futurium explores how we might live in the future through an exhibition, a lab and plenty to try for yourself. It suits a day when you want more than quietly moving from room to room.

08

C/O Berlin

C/O Berlin presents photography and visual media in the former Amerika Haus by Zoo station. One current exhibition fits neatly into an afternoon before you head back into the city.

09

German Spy Museum

The visit is more hands-on here, with codes, a laser maze and other interactive stations along the route. Check available time slots before you go, so your visit is already sorted when you arrive.

10

Charlottenburg Palace

At Charlottenburg Palace, reconstructed rooms and art collections can fill a visit without taking over the entire day. Choose one open section and, if the weather works, add a short walk through the palace gardens.

Something warm afterwards

When your hands need warming up again, settle in at The Leaf over Sahlep or tea – and perhaps a slice of San Sebastián cheesecake to share.
